A spirit that is not afraid.

I used to kinda want to work for ESPN. But now, I'm not so sure.

Lately, as someone who nerdily paid rapt attention in four years of journalism training and takes very seriously the earned right to weild the pen, I'm sickened by ESPN and the media. I'm sickened that those who make their living off reporting with truth, accuracy, precision, discouraged use of "unnamed sources," and fair and balanced journalism have far missed the mark. You should be innately and desperately sure of your story. You should stand behind it no matter what because you nailed it. ESPN, do you feel like that?

"Fabricate, exaggerate and wait for the hits and 'buzz.'
That’s their kind of journalism."
- The Auburn Plainsman

But really. Even if this story wasn't about my pride and joy football team I know I'd be appalled.

Just sayin'.

I stand with Cam.

Dixie's Heart

I'm one of those types: home's never gonna be anywhere but little Montgomery (Even when I have my loft in the city.) Doing senior thesis research in De Bow's Review, an antebellum journal, I couldn't help but smile when my hometown was mentioned. Here's to hometowns!

"The capitol is located on elevated ground on Capitol Hill. The view from the upper part of the building is very extensive over the surrounding country."
(Still is, and Jeff Davis's house is in it's shadow.)

"There are many handsome private residences, built of brick, and several of them very expensive and magnificent."
(I gotta say I wish more had been preserved...)

"In this capital there are three newspaper establishments, The Montgomery Advertiser, The Confederation, and The Montgomery Mail, whose editors are scholars, and obliging gentlemen."
(Well, well, well, if journalistic traits are still in the water, I hope I drank enough.)

"The inhabitants of this metropolis, as well as of the whole state are citizens of liberal, hospital, intelligent, and obliging character..."
(I like to think they still are.)

Heard in the Halls: "They just killed Southern Accents."

Today it was announced that Southern Accents will close. The Septemeber/October issue of the magazine will be the last luxury Southern glossy publication of its kind.

While the beautiful website will live on, news from Sylvia Auton about the sophisticated bi-monthly magazine's news arrived in my work inbox this morning. Already, media websites are a-buzz with reporting.

It's a harsh lesson in Southern Progress Corporation interning when the magazine the floor above you closes due to the economy. And this is the industry I'm trekking into...

You think this is just a magazine?

"You think this is just a magazine? This is not just a magazine.
This is a shining beacon of hope."

I adore magazines. You're talking to a girl that had the above Devil Wears Prada quote written on an ecru monogrammed stationary card and taped above her desk. A girl who catalogues magazines under my bed by publication and date.

Obsessive, yes. But I like what I like. And I can't wait to see The September Issue whenever it may come down to the sweet south. The documentary chronicles Anna Wintour and Vogue staffers as they prepare the mouth-wateringly thick September issue for print.

This article published on NYMag.com yesterday fed to the excitement. And by excitement I mean Condé fascination.

If you haven't seen the trailer for The September Issue yet, watch it. And circle September 11 in your calendar.
